Terry Dubose MS, RDMS, FSDMS, FAIUM
1. Three 2007 SDMS Annual Conference Lectures available online - Free CME for SDMS Members!

The Profession's Identity: Words and Actions Matter
Terry DuBose, MS, RDMS, FSDMS, FAIUM

On October 13, Terry DuBose, MS, RDMS, FSDMS, FAIUM, delivered the second Stephen McLaughlin Memorial Lecture during the 2007 SDMS Annual Conference in Las Vegas. The lecture is named for Stephen McLaughlin, a former SDMS President who lost his battle with brain cancer in 2005.

Mr. DuBose's lecture titled The Profession's Identity: Words and Actions Matter was a hit with the Annual Conference attendees. DuBose stressed the importance of using sonography and sonographer when referring to the modality and its practitioners. “The accurate use of these words will make a difference in how people think about our profession,” he said.

Legal-Medical Issues for the Sonographer - What You Don’t Know Can Hurt Your Practice
William A. Sarraille, JD

This presentation will provide a practical, comprehensive look into the issue of sonographer clinical practice and legal liability. In today’s litigious healthcare environment, the susceptibility of sonographers to medical malpractice lawsuits is an issue requiring information, understanding and preventative action.

Imaging of the Aorta - Screening, Measuring, and Comparison with MRI, CT and Angiography
Edward G. Grant M.D.

An aortic aneurysm remains a common and potentially deadly entity. Due to the availability of modern imaging techniques it is now diagnosed in the majority of patients prior to rupture. This lecture will present the sonographic features of various diseases affecting the aorta and its branches, including aneurysm, dissection, ectasia and the generalized effects of atherosclerosis. The role of imaging in the placement and follow-up of endostents, as well the potential role of sonography in screening, will be presented.

NOTE: Attendees of these lectures in Las Vegas are NOT eligible to receive CME credit for this activity.

To view the presentations, you will need a computer with speakers or headphones, Internet access, a web browser with Adobe Flash Player (and Adobe Reader to view the transcript) installed.

A tutorial on using the online presentation interface available at: http://www.sdms.org/seminar/tutorial/tutorial.htm

A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page is also available at: http://www.sdms.org/members/3354/3354faq.asp

2. Speak your mind! We need you to complete two important SDMS surveys

Because your feedback is critical to the mission of the SDMS, we would like to invite your participation in two short surveys. Both of these will only take a few minutes, and your input is important.

SDMS Practice Management Committee Survey
The SDMS Practice Management Committee is inviting SDMS members to offer their comments/opinions on the SDMS' policy regarding non-diagnostic use of ultrasound. The SDMS Practice Management Committee is reviewing the existing policy to determine whether it adequately reflects the opinions and practices of the sonography community.

To review the current policy and voice your comments, visit: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=UfkjqGX8lLyd42XsMfJzsQ_3d_3d

SDMS Member Needs Assessment Survey
As a member, your opinions on the products, services, and support offered by the SDMS are of great value and enable us to better serve you. The SDMS Member Needs Assessment Survey will be sent to you via email. Please watch for it over the next couple of days and take a moment to complete this short survey. This survey is confidential and will be used to assist in strategic planning and decision-making for potential or enhanced member benefits, programs, and services, and the manner in which they are delivered.

  4. Oregon Legislative Update

Last year the Oregon Legislature attempted to pass a bill that would have established a new licensure board for multiple imaging modalties, including sonographers. That bill was supported by the Oregon Board of Radiologic Technology (OBRT) which would have been 'morphed' into the new imaging board. The SDMS, along with several other sonography related organizations, attempted to modify the language of the bill to address a number of concerns that were expressed regarding the licensure and regulation of sonographers. The OBRT declined to make the changes and the sonography organizations opposed the adoption of the bill which eventually 'died' in committee.

Efforts are now underway in Oregon to prepare for a re-introduction of the 'imaging licensure bill' in the next legislative session. SDMS volunteers are actively engaged in representing our members’ interests. SDMS is also working in a collaborative effort with other sonography related organizations to insure that the profession's interests are appropriately addressed in the new bill. The significance of the issue in Oregon is that this state could be the first state to provide a licensure framework for sonographers as part of an 'imaging board'. Future updates will follow in association publications.

  5. New SDMS Treasurer

The SDMS President, Shannon Boswell, has appointed a new Treasurer, Katherine (Katie) Kuntz, to serve out the unexpired term of the former Treasurer who resigned from office. As specified by the Society's Bylaws, the President's appointment required a two thirds approval vote of the remaining members of the Board of Directors. Ms. Kuntz will serve as the Association's Treasurer through October of 2009.

SDMS Sonography Puzzles are a series of online crossword and word search puzzles that sonography educators can incorporate into their educational programs or can be used by students and sonographers just for fun. The puzzles are interactive and a fun way to learn sonography-related terminology.

A new puzzle will be added each month and announced in SDMS Sound News. The puzzles may feature a broad or specific topic theme (e.g., anatomy or kidney anatomy). The interactive puzzles can be completed online (using Adobe's free Flash player) or you can print the puzzle for later use. This month's puzzle, titled "General Ultrasound Terms" was submitted by Debra Krukowski at Triton College DMS Program in River Grove, IL.
