The new site features information and applications for the Foundation's scholarships, CME grants, and awards. Proposed Society Name Change / 2000 SDMS Elections ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The May/June 2000 News Wave should be arriving in your mailbox soon. It contains an ballot which needs to be completed and returned by July 19. The SDMS Board of Directors is proposing a name change for the society. Currently the legal name is "Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers." The proposed name change would result in the following name: "Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography" The Board felt that the new name more accurately reflects the scope and support of the profession by the Society. The ballot in News Wave also includes nominees for the Finance Committee and Nominating Committee. Ballots for Region 2 and Region 7 Directors will be mailed directly to the members in the respective region. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 4. SDMS Professional Liability Insurance Program Available ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you receive a renewal notice on your professional liability insurance, STOP! Take a moment to compare costs before you automatically renew. Effective January 1, 2000, the SDMS has endorsed a new Professional Liability Insurance plan which may save you money. The basic rates are only: * $15 per year for students * $85 per year for employed sonographers * $128 per year for part-time self-employed sonographers * $255 per year for full-time self-employed sonographers Not only are the basic rates probably lower than your current plan, the plan will also offer discounts for recent graduates and for obtaining specified continuing education in risk management, among other things. (The first course will be available at the SDMS 17th Annual Conference, September 14-17 in Dallas so be sure to attend). This new plan is underwritten by TIG Insurance Company, an “A” Excellent-rated insurance company according to A.M. Best, the most recognized rater of the financial strength of insurance companies. SDMS Member to Establish Ultrasound Program in Ghana ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Ann Polin, a member of SDMS, has been granted a one year sabbatical from her postion as Program Chair at Bellevue Community College in Bellevue, Washington. She will be leaving Seattle to Aninwah Medical Center in Kumasi, Ghana, West Africa where she will be volunteering to teach and perform diagnostic ultrasound for the year. She will be taking her two young daughters with her. Sponsors are being sought to provide some basic funding for shipping, travel expenses, and to purchase some supplies and equipment that the hospital needs and the ultrasound school needs.
