  http://www.sdms.org/resources/sonomonth

Sonography Awareness Month promotional products include posters, balloons, mugs, stickers, buttons, mints, and T-shirts. This year's logo, "Sonographers - Yes, we SCAN!" appears on all these products. Quantities are limited! So, don't delay in placing your order. For more information, visit:

  3. Foundation Scholarship Winners

The SDMS Educational Foundation awards scholarships to students attending CAAHEP accredited programs three times each year: March 30, July 31 and November 30. These scholarships are funded through your donations to the Foundation and from the sale of the Foundation's products. The following is a list of scholarship recipients for the July 31 deadline:

Two special scholarships have been endowed through the Foundation with scholarship recipients chosen each July. The SDMS Presidential Scholarship, established as the Foundation's most prestigious scholarship, is awarded annually to a student who displays a clearly defined high level of excellence in academics, as well as the drive that epitomizes the ultrasound professional. The 2002 recipient of the SDMS Presidential Scholarship is Diane Duea from El Centro Community College.

The Trudy Dubinsky Memorial Scholarship was created in memory of Trudy Dubinsky, whose life was taken in a tragic accident, but whose love and dedication to ultrasound was apparent. This scholarship is awarded each July to a student who exhibits the dedication, professionalism and love of ultrasound that personified Trudy Dubinsky. The 2002 recipient of the SDMS Trudy Dubinsky Memorial Scholarship is Eileen Von Diezelski. Eileen is a student at Keiser College.

Please join us in congratulating the recipients of these scholarships and in wishing them successful and enjoyable careers in sonography!

  4. We Like To Hear From Our Members But...

Each month when the SDMS Sound News is sent to members throughout the world, we hear back from several members in a very unwelcome way. Some of our members are using computers that are infected with viruses...and they probably don't even know it...which means they are also sending infected messages to family, friends, and coworkers. SDMS has gone to great lengths (and expense) to ensure all our email messages to our members are virus-free and to protect the SDMS computer systems from viruses and other threats. But each week, we still receive many infected email messages from SDMS members. And most of today's viruses hide their true origin so it's almost impossible to track the virus-laden messages to a particular member.

Unfortunately, today's computers are susceptible to attack by others. Each month, new vulnerabilities are identified and software updates are released. Anti-virus software is no longer optional...and it needs to be updated at least monthly to identify new viruses! It's important to make sure you have installed the latest software updates and security patches for your software (browser, word processor, email, anti-virus, etc). It can be a time-consuming task but it's one task that is very important! Think of the information that could be wiped out in the blink of an eye!

For a quick check-up to see if your computer is currently infected, try this FREE site:

  6. SDMS Revokes CME Provider Status

Oakstone Medical Publishing has had its SDMS CME 'approved provider' status revoked effective June 17, 2002 due to non-compliance with the SDMS CME Guidelines. The ARDMS and ARRT have been notified and will not be accepting SDMS CME credit from Oakstone Medical Publishing for its subscription publication, 'In-Service Reviews in Diagnostic Medical Sonography', due to revocation of its SDMS CME provider status. This notification is provided to keep the SDMS membership fully informed.

  7. SVT Changes Name to Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)

Members of the Society of Vascular Technology (SVT) voted to amend the SVT Bylaws, changing the Society’s name to Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU). The vote took place on August 2, 2002 during the Town Meeting at SVT’s 25th Annual Conference. The name change takes effect on September 1, 2002.

SDMS and SVU have a joint Government Relations Committee which monitors legislative and regulatory issues of interest to and with potential implications for ultrasound.

  8. SDMS Committees

SDMS Committees serve as the foundation for much of the Society's efforts on behalf of its members. Committee members are volunteers who have agreed to contribute time and energy to the committees' activities.

Committee chairs are appointed by the President. Committee members serve a two-year term and are selected from members who have submitted a "Committee Interest Form". The Committee Interest Form for 2003-2004 will be included in the next issue of News Wave (Oct/Nov/Dec).

A list of the SDMS Committees, their current members, and their objectives can be found on the SDMS website at:
