4. Certification News
ARDMS ANNOUNCES 1,000th BREAST SPECIALTY CERTIFICANT
The American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) has announced that it has awarded its 1,000th certification in the breast sonography specialty. This result was hailed as 'making a significant difference in women's lives by improving the delivery of breast health-care and enhancing patient safety'. The registry also cited a recent American Cancer Society document, which noted that; "Ultrasound has become a valuable diagnostic adjunct to mammography", and included reference to the shortage of quality breast sonographers. The ARDMS Breast Certification exam was identified as a critical tool for dealing with the shortage of breast sonographers. Candidates for Breast specialty certification must verify extensive clinical experience in breast sonography and must pass two rigorous exams covering ultrasound physics and instrumentation and specific areas of breast sonography shown to be most important for quality practice.
For additional information, visit:
http://www.ardms.org/whatsnew/whatsnew_frameset.html
Note: The SDMS offers a National Certification Examination Review for Breast (http://www.sdms.org/products/ncer.asp) which has been a very popular and effective tool in assisting sonographers to prepare for the ARDMS Breast Certification exam.
ARRT ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF SONOGRAPHY CERTIFICATION TO NON R.T.s
The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has announced that the ARRT Sonography certification exam, previously available only to R.T.'s, will be made available to individuals who are not already registered in radiologic technology beginning in 2005. Non R.T.s who are interested in pursuing this credential will be required to be a graduate of an 'appropriately-accredited sonography educational program' and have completed the ARRT-defined clinical requirements and met ARRT's ethical standards to take the test. Since its inception in 2000, the ARRT Sonography certification exam has required candidates to hold registration in radiography or a support category of radiology such as nuclear medicine technology or radiation therapy. According to ARRT staff, there are currently 36 RT's throughout the U.S. who have taken and passed the ARRT Sonography certification exam.
