  3. SDMS Testifies at ARDMS Public Hearing on Prerequisite No. 2 Issue

On December 9, Charlotte Henningsen testified on behalf of the SDMS at an ARDMS public hearing regarding the ARDMS Staff Report on Prerequisite No. 2. SDMS essentially agreed with the ARDMS staff report, but felt that in order to ensure the integrity of programmatic accreditation, the essential element of programmatic accreditation should be defined and added to the Prerequisite 2 recommendation reflected in the staff report. The key elements suggested were:
  • integration of clinical and didactic education
  • a peer review process of educational standards
  • accountability through program evaluation and outcomes assessment
The SDMS believes that providing a definition of programmatic accreditation will not only ensure that the integrity of Prerequisite 2 will be maintained, it will also ensure that graduates who challenge the ARDMS examinations under Prerequisite 2 will be extending the same quality patient care as is currently being received.

  4. CME Article Available: Professional Risk Management for Sonographers

What could happen if you inadvertently did not follow standards of care for your patients? What if one hectic day, with one particularly trying exam, you failed to recognize that your patient needed some extra assistance?

You don't have to cause severe injury to a patient to face a serious lawsuit as a consequence of your actions. Something as "little" as indifference (as in failing to recognize a need for help), or abandonment (as in failing to return a phone call) can be reason enough to be held liable in a malpractice suit.

SDMS and Professional Risk Advisors, Inc., the SDMS' official professional liability insurance agency, is pleased to present you with the "facts" about sonographer malpractice insurance. "Professional Risk Management for Sonographers" will give you information on how to avoid common pitfalls associated with professional liability. Gary McCammon, President of Professional Risk Advisors, will walk you through the "Anatomy of a Lawsuit" and highlight the measures you can take to make sure your practice is "covered."

  6. Medicare Proposals Aim to Curb Rising Imaging Costs

Physician credentialing and benchmarking are two of seven draft recommendations the influential Medicare Payment Advisory Commission is considering as part of an effort to define strategies to reduce escalating Medicare imaging costs. Staff analyst Ariel Winter presented draft recommendations to MedPAC in a meeting Dec. 9. The advisory group will meet again this month to decide on final recommendations. The proposal will be presented to Congress in March.

MedPAC has been gathering information for more than a year to support a possible regulatory assault on fast-rising costs of diagnostic imaging covered by Medicare. A MedPAC staff report in October found that CT, MR, and nuclear medicine utilization paid by Medicare rose 15% annually between fiscal 1999 and 2002. In fiscal 2002, Medicare spent $6.5 billion on medical imaging. This constituted 14% of total spending for services provided through the Medicare fee schedule, according to the report.

Draft recommendations from the advisory group would ask Congress to develop standards for physicians who interpret imaging studies. Criteria may include minimum requirements for formal training, continuing education, and experience for physicians who bill Medicare for interpreting imaging procedures, Winter said.
