1. IN MEMORIAM – Shirley J. Staiano, MS, RDMS, RDCS
In mid-November, Shirley Staiano, SDMS (at that time known as American Society of Ultrasound Technical Specialists - ASUTS) President from 1974 to 1976, passed away. Ms. Staiano is remembered by many friends and colleagues as a tireless supporter of promoting the recognition of sonographers in the medical community. To that end, Ms. Staiano was instrumental in establishing the Society's journal, Medical Ultrasound, the precursor to the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Ms. Staiano's family would like to invite Shirley's friends and colleagues to a memorial gathering at her home in Tucson, on Friday, January 20, 2006, from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

3. NEW! Hand-Carried Ultrasound Research Award
The SDMS Educational Foundation and SonoSite, Inc., have announced the creation of the Hand-Carried Ultrasound Research Award. SonoSite will underwrite the cost of the award.
The award will recognize original research on the positive economic, clinical or ergonomic benefits of using Hand-Carried Ultrasound (HCU) as well as innovative clinical applications of HCU technology. SonoSite has provided an unrestricted grant to the SDMS Educational Foundation, part of which will fund an annual $1,500 prize. The first award will be presented at the SDMS Annual Conference, in October 2006.
“Sonographers have traditionally been at the forefront of developing and refining imaging techniques.,” said Kevin Goodwin, President and CEO of SonoSite. “By sponsoring this award SonoSite wishes to encourage and recognize those sonographers who utilize the sophisticated technology embodied in HCU systems to further advance their profession and improve patient care.”
