2. Register for the 2005 SDMS Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas
Dear Colleagues,
The SDMS Conference Management Committee and I have been “stumped”!
We’ve played our own game of Puzzle the Pros; how could we offer a better Annual Conference than the New Orleans Mardi Gras Madness of 2004? Thanks to your enthusiastic participation as speakers and attendees, that meeting was a huge success with the best attendance ever.
We think we’ve done it!
DALLAS DAZZLES aspires to be greater than our New Orleans event. We’ve continued the tradition of offering educational tracks for a variety of ultrasound specialties. Our faculty has been recruited from the “top gun” roster of the ultrasound community, and they will provide cutting-edge information.
The pre-conference tutorial sessions all have a fresh face and fresh faces. The selection has expanded; a new, afternoon tutorial session on Managing Resources is a “must” for department managers and administrators.
Did I mention “having a ball”? Yes, you will! Just plan to attend the Flashback Fever gala in your costume from the past and join the fun.
Come, learn and judge for yourselves; you won’t want to miss DALLAS DAZZLES!
See you there.
Rob Daigle, BA, RVT, FSVU
Chair, Conference Management Committee
P.S. Register on or before August 12 to receive "early bird" discounted registration prices. Join SDMS and save even more!

5. Standards document update from UK cites SDMS
A recently released publication by the National Health Service in Britain, The Management of Health, Safety, and Welfare Issues for NHS Staff, is a document used in the management of the British health system. Sonographer MSI 'made' this edition in chapter 9.4 (copy of the language listed directly below), and the SDMS WRMSD standards are source cited, as well as mention of SDMS as a related information source.
Occupationally related MSDs – an example Consideration should be given to risks resulting from specific tasks which particular health professionals undertake, and to the risk reduction measures that can prevent MSDs unique to their profession.
Sonographers, for instance, experience a high level of musculoskeletal symptoms.
Studies¹ have shown that 20 per cent of this group leave the profession or take premature retirement options because of persistent pain problems.
It has been recognised that, with a collaborative effort, the prevalence of these complaints amongst sonographers can be reduced and, in turn, personal, social and fiscal losses are also significantly reduced. Findings show that this group of professionals regularly has to adopt unnatural postures. There is habitual slouching and twisting of the spine, excessive reaching forward, arm abduction and forceful gripping of a tool in the operating hand. Three components of prevention have been identified.
- Primary – stop the problems developing in the first place.
- Secondary – when problems develop, what action can be taken to treat the complaint and reduce the likelihood of long-term morbidity or chronicity developing?
¹ Industry standards for the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in sonographers, The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers Chapter 9: Manual handling
- Tertiary – when the complaint has been effectively dealt with, what can be done to reduce the chance of a relapse occurring?
Adjustable equipment used at the correct height and in the correct manner, adequate rest breaks and early intervention, all form the basis for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders for this group of professionals.
Recommendations can be found in Industry standards for the prevention of work-related musculoskeletal disorders in sonography www.sdms.org/pdf/wrmsd2003.pdf

6. Health Care Leaders Offer Expert Views on Health Care Costs
Survey results recently released by the Commonwealth Fund, health policy experts and innovators in health care delivery and finance, were asked to rate how effective certain actions would be in reducing health care costs and unnecessary use of health care services. To reduce costs, 57% said rewarding efficient and high-quality providers would be very or extremely effective (italics inserted), while 44% said adopting common payment methods and rates for all payers, 38% said promoting best practices to improve efficiency and quality, and 35% said public reporting of provider quality and care costs. To reduce unnecessary use of services, 56% said improving disease-management services for patients with high-cost conditions would be very or extremely effective, while 52% said using evidence-based medical guidelines, and 46% said expanding the use of information technology. Health care spending in the United States continues to rise at a level far outpacing the rate of inflation. Finding effective ways to control these expenditures is a central concern for policymakers, those in the public and private sectors, and consumers. Additional information can be found at: http://www.cmwf.org/surveys/surveys_show.htm?doc_id=275633
This information is interesting in light of the Society's commitment to improving the quality of sonography services through requisite sonographer credentialing and laboratory accreditation.
