A. Body of Knowledge and Standards
SDMS will ensure that clearly defined standards for education and practice are universally accepted.
- Ensure that lab accreditation standards include mandatory certification for all sonographers
- Promote establishment and adoption of standardized sonography educational curricula
- Promote establishment of a professional career ladder for sonographers
- Develop and publish sonography practice standards
- Increase the number of accredited sonography educational programs and their graduates
- Expand the number of accredited sonography labs
B. Awareness
SDMS will be the recognized source for information to the general public and medical community regarding the sonography profession.
- Expand members’ knowledge of issues relating to sonography
- Ensure awareness among prospective students of the value of accredited sonography educational programs
- Increase public awareness of diagnostic medical sonography services
- Increase the medical community’s understanding of the diagnostic medical sonography profession
C. Reputation
Sonographers will be recognized as medical professionals who are certified by a nationally recognized certification body and sonographers entering the profession will have graduated from an accredited sonography program.
- Increase recognition of the quality of work and professionalism of sonographers
- Promote sonographers’ professionalism and pride in their career
D. Educational Products and Services
SDMS will be the primary resource for the ongoing educational needs for sonography.
- Increase the number and variety of sonography educational opportunities supporting initial education, certification, recertification and continued medical education (CME)
- Expand access to sonography educational activities
E. Legislative and Regulatory Advocacy
SDMS will be the expert advocate that policymakers rely on for guidance on issues related to the sonography profession.
- Broaden SDMS political influence
