Perception is Reality - Image of a Professional
On October 13, Don Milburn presented the first Stephen M. McLaughlin Memorial Lecture during the 2006 SDMS Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado. The lecture is named for Stephen McLaughlin, a former SDMS President who lost his battle with brain cancer in 2005. Stephen McLaughlin's wife and daughter were on hand to introduce Mr. Milburn.
Mr. Milburn's lecture titled Perception is Reality - Image of a Professional hit home with the Annual Conference attendees and people have been talking about it ever since! Mr. Milburn’s lecture is now available as an online presentation on the SDMS website. While it is accessible to all sonographers to view and listen, SDMS members can also receive one CME credit by successfully completing a CME post-test. NOTE: Attendees of the lecture in Denver are NOT eligible to receive CME credit for this activity.

Miss the 2006 SDMS Annual Conference in Denver? SDMS members can earn CME credit for viewing the two newly released online presentations.
Legislative and Regulatory Update is presented by Mark Tyndall, a member of the SDMS’ lobbying team. Mr. Tyndall highlights many of the issues affecting the Medicare program and how these issues are affecting sonography. He also discusses the SDMS’ advocacy activities that have been undertaken by the SDMS at federal and state levels.
Legal-Medical Issues for the Sonographer: What You Don't Know Can Hurt You is presented by William Sarraille, an attorney and member of the SDMS’ lobbying team. Mr. Sarraille offers insight into ways a sonographer can protect themselves from legal risk.
2006 SDMS Student Conclave Presentations Also Available: Several presentations from the 2006 SDMS Student Conclave held in Denver, Colorado are now available. These topics will be of interest to future students (and sonographers) as they prepare for the exciting field of Diagnostic Medical Sonography. SDMS members can earn 1.0 CME credit for each of the five lectures by viewing the presentation and successfully completing an online post-test.
- Distance Learning Resources Available
The SDMS Career Development Committee (CDC) has produced two new educational resources. The Distance Learning Educational Clearinghouse provides information about educational programs offering distance education opportunities including sonography degree programs. The SDMS Career Development Committee developed this resource to demonstrate the online educational opportunities that are available for sonographers who are interested in pursuing additional education options. The Sonographer Higher Education Pathways is a flow chart created to outline options/outcomes for sonographers who may be interested in pursuing higher education opportunities.
