SDMS President's Message - October 2015

by Sheryl Goss

Sheryl GossIt is an honor and a privilege to begin my two-year term as President of the Society (2015-2017). I am looking forward to everything that we will accomplish together.

I am excited to continue Katie’s vision of expanding our educational topics and learning opportunities. Whether it be CME offerings, tips on how to avoid compassion fatigue, information on the latest techniques and research, or managerial training, the SDMS is dedicated to being your resource when you need anything related to your career as a sonographer.

To ensure that you as a sonographer stay healthy, the SDMS will be hosting a Consensus Conference on Work-Related Musculoskeletal Injuries (MSI) in Sonography in May of 2016. The purpose of the conference is to examine the prevalence of MSI within sonography, update the industry standards created in 2003, and develop a toolkit for sonographers and employers to use in the prevention of MSI.

I am also excited to continue SDMS’ work on increasing awareness among the general public and the medical community about the important role that diagnostic medical sonography plays in the delivery of quality patient care. I look forward to sharing with you in the upcoming months the ways that your colleagues are making a difference in the world by using their skills as sonographers.

I am pleased to report that we just wrapped up four days dedicated to diagnostic medical sonography at the 2015 SDMS Annual Conference in Dallas, Texas and it was a resounding success!

Thank you to everyone who participated. The success of the conference is directly attributable to the hard work of the Conference Management Committee, the Medal Level Supporters, Annual Conference sponsors, exhibitors, speakers, and SDMS staff as well as all of those who attended.

The SDMS Annual Conference is without a doubt a great way to earn CME credits, but learning was balanced with a host of fun activities. Many caught up with friends and colleagues from the past and others met for the first time. The SDMS Foundation Armadillo Dash generated some friendly competition and raised over $20,000 to support the SDMS Foundation’s activities. I would like to thank both our corporate supporters and attendees for their enthusiastic support and generous donations. ABDOdillo prevailed, but Vascular Spectacular, Cardiac Attack, and OBehave gave it their all. Don’t forget, you can always donate online and support your SDMS Foundation.

At the 2015 SDMS Annual Conference, we also hosted the SDMS and SDMS Foundation Awards Dinner to honor our award and competitions winners and our volunteers. It is always amazing to recognize the the members who volunteer their time to the SDMS and we look forward to working with even more of you through taskforce and micro-volunteer opportunities. I sincerely appreciate everyone’s dedication to the SDMS and our members. The accomplishments of the SDMS are because of you.

Planning has already begun for the 2016 SDMS Annual Conference. Mark your calendar and plan to join us in Orlando, Florida September 29 – October 2. You don’t want to miss out on the premier education event for the diagnostic medical sonography community. If you are curious to see what happens at an SDMS Annual Conference, please visit the SDMS Facebook page to see photos and updates from the conference. The post-conference mashup video is also a fun way to see a brief overview of the conference.

I also encourage you to consider submitting a proposal for the 2016 SDMS Annual Conference. Presenting at an SDMS Annual Conference is a great way to share your knowledge, expertise, and give back to the sonography community. December 1, 2015 is the deadline to submit and you can learn more and submit here.

In closing, if you have questions, concerns, or want to share your passion about sonography, please feel free to contact me at I look forward to serving you and the Society.
