SDMS Position Statement
Point-of-Care Ultrasound Imaging
The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) believes that point-of-care ultrasound imaging should be performed by:
- A diagnostic medical sonographer certified in the specialty area of the procedure to be performed; or
- A licensed health care provider who:
- Has acquired the necessary knowledge, skills and training in the specific point-of-care ultrasound imaging procedure to be performed; and
- Is providing the point-of-care ultrasound imaging procedure pursuant to the licensing jurisdiction’s scope of practice for the health care provider.
