The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) is a professional membership organization founded in 1970 to promote, advance, and educate its members and the medical community in the science of diagnostic medical sonography. The SDMS is the largest association of sonographers and sonography students in the world.
There are some awards that are accomplished in a lifetime that are simply inspiring. These are such awards. Awards earned over many years through service and dedication to our profession. The SDMS Fellow Membership category recognizes the lifetime achievement of individual members who have made outstanding contributions to the field of sonography and to the SDMS. An SDMS Fellow exhibits outstanding professional accomplishments as well as continued membership and sustained engagement in SDMS activities.
The Joan P. Baker Pioneer Award honors a sonographer who has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the sonography profession. Established in 1994 to honor the significant contributions of Joan P. Baker to the sonography profession, this award is given when a sonographer’s focused contribution has advanced the profession and increased the knowledge and/or welfare of sonographers.
The SDMS Distinguished Educator Award is presented to an exceptional educator in the field of diagnostic medical sonography who is driven to promote life-long learning in students and sonographers alike using innovative teaching methods.
The Stephen M. McLaughlin Memorial Lectureship was created as a tribute to past SDMS President Stephen M. McLaughlin for his service to the SDMS and to promote sonographer professionalism within the healthcare community. The lecture is presented each year at the Annual Conference in his honor.
