SDMS President's Message - August 2019

During the past couple of months, I found myself in a major health scare. I was suddenly the patient instead as the caregiver. As the journey evolved, I was reminded of our role as a sonographer and the gravity that it carries. Ultrasound was the first to image the disease present. Ultrasound was the first to show the seriousness of the presentation of the disease and the sonographer was the first to see it.

As my role as President of the SDMS comes to a close, my memories of serving will be highlighted by my most recent personal experience in the healthcare system. As sonographers, we play a vital role in the healthcare experience. We are the first to image and the first to see both the good and the severe diagnoses. May we never take that lightly. As we continue to serve in a world that is increasingly constrained by profit margins and productivity standards, let us remember the compassion and sense of purpose that propelled us to be sonographers.

The desire to be life-long learners.

The desire to help others.

The desire to find the diagnosis that would help better the life of another.

The desire to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

There are still many pressing topics within our profession that need to be addressed. The lack of state licensure and minimum educational standards as well as the continued increase in musculoskeletal injuries within our profession are several that are close to my heart and ones I will continue to pursue. I am excited to continue on the SDMS Board for two more years in the role of Past President. Ted Whitten will step into the role of President and he shares my passion to better our profession and to ensure that we continue to be the premier professional organization of sonographers for sonographers.

Thank you for the privilege of serving you.
