2019 SDMS Award and Competition Winners

The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) is proud to announce the 2019 award and competition winners who were honored September 27, 2019 at the SDMS and SDMS Foundation Awards Dinner during the 2019 SDMS Annual Conference.

SDMS Distinguished Educator Award -
The SDMS Distinguished Educator Award is presented to an exceptional educator in the field of diagnostic medical sonography who promotes life-long learning in students and sonographers alike using innovative teaching methods.

Stephen McLaughlin Memorial Lectureship - The Stephen McLaughlin Memorial Lectureship was created as a tribute to past SDMS President Stephen McLaughlin for his service to the SDMS and to promote sonographer professionalism within the healthcare community. The lecture is presented each year at the Annual Conference in his honor.

    Professionalism: The Clinic and Beyond

Joan P. Baker Pioneer Award - The Joan P. Baker Pioneer Award honors a sonographer who has made a unique and outstanding contribution to the sonography profession. Established in 1994 to honor the significant contributions of Joan P. Baker to the sonography profession, this award is given when a sonographer’s focused contribution has advanced the profession and increased the knowledge and/or welfare of sonographers.

Kenneth R. Gottesfeld Award - This award is presented annually in memory of Kenneth R. Gottesfeld, MD, a founding father in obstetrical sonography. Honorees are recognized for superior writing and contributions to the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography in 2018.

W. Frederick Sample Student Excellence Award - This award acknowledges outstanding achievement in writing in the field of diagnostic medical sonography. The award is named in memory of W. Frederick Sample, MD, whose tremendous contributions to the growth and development of the field of sonography have influenced sonographers and physicians. Because of Dr. Sample’s dedication to teaching and research, this award is given to outstanding students in diagnostic medical sonography.
