SDMS President's Message - January 2020

by Ted Whitten

SDMS Members,

Happy new year! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season.

2020 is not only the beginning of a new decade, it is also a very special year for the SDMS. It marks our 50th year of advancing sonography. In 1970, the SDMS was founded to promote, advance, and educate its members and the medical community in the science of diagnostic medical sonography. Today, the SDMS is the largest association of sonographers and sonography students in the world.

A lot has changed in 50 years, but the important role that sonographers play in our patients’ care remains the same. In the early days, sonography was utilized to answer very basic questions. Today, with the tremendous advancements in technology and image resolution, sonographers perform vital roles in many medical specialties.

Help us celebrate by submitting a photo from your career along with why you love being a sonographer for a chance to be featured on the SDMS homepage and social media accounts. Whether you are a new student or a sonographer with decades of experience, you make a difference in the lives of your patients and nothing would make us happier than to include you in our 50th anniversary celebrations.

Our celebrations will culminate at the 2020 SDMS Annual Conference in New Orleans, September 24 – 27. Mark your calendar and make plans to join us. It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to celebrate sonography with industry luminaries and the sonography community.

Thank you for being an SDMS member. The SDMS exists because of you and our accomplishments over the last five decades are a direct result of your contributions and support. Throughout the year, I will be sharing a look back at our achievements, challenges, and milestones over the last 50 years.

Please join me in wishing the SDMS a happy 50th anniversary!
