As we all continue to work through the changes that COVID-19 has brought to our lives, I am reminded about the many different things for which I am thankful. While family, friends, and my health are top of mind, I am also thankful for the opportunity to be a part of the SDMS and a vibrant community of sonographers who are dedicated to serving their patients.
April is Volunteer Recognition Month and on behalf of the SDMS, I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank our volunteers for all their efforts on behalf of our members and the patients they serve. In 2019, our dedicated volunteers gave 6,500 hours of their time to support the sonography community. They created professional development content for SDMS activities, judged SDMS awards and competitions, oversaw the SDMS budget and financial reports, worked on proposed legislation, planned program content for the SDMS Annual Conference, and much more. The SDMS would not exist without our volunteers.
My personal volunteer journey with the SDMS started in 2005. After several years of volunteering locally, I decided I wanted to volunteer on the national level. I served on the SDMS Membership Committee, which is now called the Membership and Awards Committee. It was so refreshing to volunteer with other sonographers across the country that had a passion for sonography! From that point on, I was hooked! I’ve had the privilege to serve on other SDMS committees with many other sonographers and I’ve always found the same passion no matter where I served. As the current President of the SDMS and SDMS Foundation, I’d like to encourage you to think about volunteering for the SDMS. I’m confident that you’ll also find it very rewarding.
Volunteer opportunities with the SDMS range from long-term commitments such as the Board of Directors, committees, and task forces to micro-volunteer projects that are shorter in nature. As you can see from my personal experience, volunteering with the SDMS is an extremely rewarding experience and a wonderful way to grow both professionally and personally.
