SDMS President's Message - November 2016

As you start your preparations for the holiday season, I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on why you chose sonography as a career as well the people who were your mentors and helped you become who you are. Yes, sonography brings career opportunities that we may not have imagined and we get to do some pretty cool things with technology, but I know that many of you are like me in that you chose sonography because it lets you make a difference every day just by going to work.

We all have those patients we remember - the ones who touched our heart and made being a sonographer worthwhile. On the flip side, I guarantee you that your patients also remember you. Maybe you shared their joy at good news or in the times when their prognosis wasn’t good you were a calming presence. Maybe you simply said good morning or held casual conversations while scanning. Whether it is for actions large or small, and although in the stress of dealing with the healthcare system it might go unsaid, your patients are thankful for you.

So don’t forget, when your days (and nights) are long, you do this because your patients need you. They are depending on you to obtain the images needed for the doctor to accurately diagnose and treat them. Your mentors are proud of the sonographer that you are and everything that you do to make a difference.

In this season of thanksgiving, I encourage you to pay it forward by supporting the SDMS Foundation. The SDMS Foundation is dedicated to supporting the diagnostic medical sonography community and your donation will help others make a difference in patient’s lives through grants, scholarships, and international assistance.

Thank you for your continued support of the SDMS and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.
