The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) is celebrating Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) in October with extra focus on the Society’s year-round mission: encouraging sonographers to take pride in educating the public and other medical professionals about their profession.
Every October, the SDMS adopts a unifying theme and provides a selection of merchandise adorned with that theme to help sonographers foster interest and conversations about sonography with the patients and healthcare professionals they encounter, as well as the public.
Nationwide celebration of MUAM is a shared effort of the SDMS and the following organizations:
- American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)
- American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- American Society of Echocardiography (ASE)
- Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI)
- Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS)
- Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU)
The SDMS 2022 MUAM theme is “Finding Answers Within,” which acknowledges the vital role sonography plays in supporting medical diagnoses and thorough understanding of patients’ conditions and needed treatment.
MUAM merchandise found on the SDMS website helps everyone celebrate the important impact sonographers have on patients’ health and well-being.
The SDMS is dedicated to the advancement of the sonography profession through not just the annual MUAM celebration but also by:
- Serving as a primary source of authoritative continuing medical education opportunities (CME) and SDMS CME credits
- Producing a high-quality, peer-reviewed medical journal devoted to sonography, the Journal of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JDMS)
- Providing sonographers with professional development opportunities
- Stimulating and facilitating original research and critical thinking
- Forging collaborative relationships with other allied health, imaging, and healthcare organizations
- Advocating for sonographers and the sonography profession in multiple arenas, including government, media, and education
