Yosefa Pessin, DHSc, RDMS, RDCS, RVT, program chair and director of the Diagnostic Medical Imaging Program at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, is the 2022 Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) Distinguished Educator, SDMS President Catherine E. Rienzo, EdD, RT(R)(ARRT), RDMS, FSDMS, has announced.
Pessin, a sonographer for over 25 years with registry certifications in abdomen, OB/GYN, adult echocardiography and vascular technology, is also an associate professor at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University. She brings extensive experience to students as a result of her clinical work at world renown hospitals and outpatient and private practice settings.
She is involved in all facets of the university’s diagnostic medical imaging program’s sonography curriculum and is also actively involved in university service committees. Her research areas of interest focus on infection control prevention, educational technology, and simulation.
Pessin is a SUNY Downstate graduate with a bachelor’s degree in diagnostic medical imaging. She has a doctorate in health sciences from A.T. Still University and a master’s degree in curriculum development and instructional technology from the University of Albany.
She joined the SDMS in 2015. In addition to being recognized as the 2022 SDMS Distinguished Educator, other awards received by Pessin include the following:
- Senior member, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM)
- SDMS Kenneth R. Gottesfeld Award, 2018 and 2019
- Dr. Donald Scherl Faculty Excellence Award
SDMS Distinguished Educator Award
This award honors exceptional educators in diagnostic medical sonography who are recognized for their dedication to teaching, innovation in education, and ongoing support for students through mentorship, research, and voluntarism. Pessin was honored as 2022 Distinguished Educator at the 2022 SDMS Annual Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, September 29-October 1, 2022.
