Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I would like to submit my college courses for CME credit. How do I do this?
A: SDMS CME credits may be awarded by SDMS for a sonography course offered by an accredited college-based medical sonography program, or an educational activity (formal course of study) offered by an regionally accredited postsecondary educational institution leading to a medically-related degree in such fields as biologic or physical sciences, medical sonography, health and medical sciences, and allied health sciences. Eligible courses would include, but are not limited to:
- Anatomy
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Embryology

Required documentation includes course description and transcript. SDMS may require submission of additional documentation. Medically or professionally unrelated courses are not eligible for CME credit (e.g., art appreciation, history, physical education). If unsure about whether a course will qualify for SDMS CME credit, please contact SDMS. Application for SDMS CME credit must be made within one (1) year of successfully completing the college course. Q: Can I claim CME credit for authoring a sonography article?
A: Individuals may request SDMS CME credit for their role as an author or editor of a sonography article or textbook. No one else may apply on behalf of the individual. All CME requests must be made within one year CME credits within one (1) year of the publication. CME credits will be awarded in applicable specialty/content areas when possible. Otherwise, the credits will be awarded in the “Other” category. To apply for CME credit, please visit the SDMS Individual CME Credit Request System.
Q: I want to have monthly/bi monthly/quarterly meetings at my facility and offer CME credits to my sonographers. How do I do this?
A: After receiving approval as an SDMS CME Provider, you should apply for an SDMS Study Group, Level 1 (12 meetings a year) or Level 2 (24 meetings a year). Your attendees do not have to be SDMS members; however those applying for a Study Group will receive a significant discount if they are an SDMS member. SDMS members may select one, two or three year Study Groups. Nonmembers may only apply for one year study groups. Once your study group is approved you must log in and apply for each session, at least 15 days in advance of the meeting. Participant rosters must be updated and SDMS CME Certificates emailed within 30 days post session. See also Study Group information.
Q: I want to have a seminar/conference and offer CME credit. How do I do this?
A: After receiving approval as an SDMS CME Provider, you should apply for an SDMS Seminar/Conference activity. You may choose Single Offering Seminar/Conference (only occurs one time) or Multi Offering Seminar/Conference (same conference held multiple times in time frame –one, two or three years). Your attendees do not have to be SDMS members; however those applying for the activity will receive a significant discount if they are an SDMS member. Nonmembers may only apply for a one year Single- or Multi-Offering Seminar/Conference. SDMS Members may apply for one, two or three years of Conference/Seminar Credit. You must apply at least 15 days before your event will be held. Participant rosters must be updated and SDMS CME Certificates emailed within 30 days post session. Q: I want to offer a Seminar/Meeting to train sonographers on how to use ultrasound equipment. How do I do this?
A: After receiving approval as an SDMS CME Provider, you should apply for an SDMS Applications Training/System Optimization activity. You may choose Single Offering (only occurs one time) or Multi Offering (same activity is held multiple times in time frame –one, two or three years). Your attendees do not have to be SDMS members; however those applying for the activity will receive a significant discount if they are an SDMS member. Nonmembers may only apply for a one-year Multi Offering Applications Training/System Optimization Activity or a Single Offering Applications Training/System Optimization Activity. SDMS Members may apply for one, two or three years of Applications Training/System Optimization Activity Credit. You must apply at least 15 days before your event will be held. Q: I want to apply for CME credit for a webinar, a book, or a DVD. How do I do this?
A: After receiving approval as an SDMS CME Provider, you should apply for an SDMS Self-Instructional activity. Your attendees do not have to be SDMS members; however those applying for the activity will receive a significant discount if they are an SDMS member. SDMS members may select one, two or three year Self Instructional Credit. Nonmembers may only apply for one year Self Instructional Credit. You must apply at least 45 days before you plan to offer SDMS CME Credit for the activity. Participant rosters must be updated and SDMS CME Certificates emailed within 30 days post session. Q: I want to give SDMS CME credit to my Clinical Instructors. How do I do this?
A: After receiving approval as an SDMS CME Provider, you should apply for an SDMS Clinical Instructorship. To apply, you must be a program director for a CAAHEP-accredited educational program. You may give each sonographer up to 6 SDMS CME credits per calendar year for providing student instruction.* One SDMS CME credit may be offered for every two hours of student instruction. Your instructors do not have to be SDMS Members, however if the person applying for the Clinical Instructorship Activity is an SDMS Member, they may give SDMS Clinical Instructorship CME credits at no cost. SDMS members may select one, two, or three year Clinical Instructorship Credit. Nonmembers may only apply for a one-year Clinical Instructorship Credit and must pay the applicable fees. Credits and instructorships run on a calendar year. If you apply in November, your instructorship will only be valid until December 31 of that year. It is beneficial to apply in the early part of the year to maximize the credit time. Credit must be issued and SDMS CME Certificates emailed with in the calendar year you have applied for credit. *ARRT does not accept SDMS CME Credit for Clinical Instructorship. It is the program directors’ responsibility to notify all clinical instructors of this circumstance.
Schedule of Fees
SDMS CME Management System Tips
- The SDMS CME Management System approval process lets SDMS CME providers quickly enter required information and documentation needed for approval.
- CME Providers can enter or upload required documentation including timed agendas, faculty, promotional materials, etc.
- SDMS members receive discount pricing on application fees and can apply for approval periods up to three (3) years.
- SDMS CME providers can designate multiple activity directors under the same CME provider. Each activity director can manage their own CME activities and general users can be assigned to perform data-entry.
- SDMS approved CME providers are provided with digital signatures to use on CME certificates, meaning providers never have to sign a certificate again!
- Clinical Instructorship credit is FREE to sonography educational program directors at CAAHEP-accredited educational programs. Clinical Instructors can earn up to six (6) SDMS CME credits per calendar year. SDMS membership required.
- Bonus: Individuals can earn SDMS CME credit for their role as an Author/Editor or for completing an eligible accredited college course.
SDMS CME Tracker System
 | SDMS CME activities approved under the SDMS CME Policies and Procedures are tracked in the SDMS CME Tracker system once the approved CME provider submits their attendance rosters. Once the electronic roster is submitted, the activity will automatically appear on the SDMS members' CME transcript.
SDMS CME credits received by SDMS members are reported on a daily basis, so please allow up to 24 hours from the time the electronic roster is submitted for credits to be transmitted to the ARDMS. Please note that the member’s ARDMS number must be on the participant roster and entered into the management system for the CME credit to be sent to ARDMS.
