The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS), a national association representing over 12,500 sonographers, announces an important change in professional classification by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS)1. In the Bureau's most recent edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook2, the diagnostic medical sonographer is classified as an occupation that is separate and distinct from the radiology technologist.

The official recognition of sonography as a distinct health occupation category in its own right is considered to be a significant turning point for the profession. While the historical roots of sonography may have been in radiology, sonography has now expanded into all medical disciplines and specialties. "Official governmental recognition of the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer as a unique provider of diagnostic healthcare services is an appropriate and long awaited outcome", said Kevin Evans, SDMS President.

The SDMS encourages employers to make the appropriate changes to the classification and job descriptions of sonographer employees within their institution/facility. By accurate documentation and reporting of employees' job classification and description, employers will ultimately benefit by the provision of accurate data that will impact their administrative decisions. The BLS provides some of the Nation's most sensitive and important economic information. Its major indicators are not only a key source of data used by the President, Congress, and other Federal policy makers in monitoring the status of the economy and making economic decisions, but they also are used by public and private institutions for economic planning and analysis.

SDMS has prepared the Model Job Description: Diagnostic Medical Sonographer to assist employers in making the necessary changes to job descriptions. The model job description is available at:

  1. The BLS is the principal fact-finding agency for the Federal Government in the field of labor economics and statistics. It provides impartial, timely, and accurate data relevant to the social and economic conditions of our Nation, its workers, its workplaces, and the workers' families.
