Dear SDMS Members,

At the SDMS, advocacy is not just an action – it’s a responsibility. We know that every policy and every piece of legislation has the potential to shape your ability to practice, protect patients, and preserve the integrity of our profession.

Why Licensure and Credentialing Matter
One of the most important ways we protect the profession is by supporting state licensure for sonographers. Licensure helps ensure that only qualified, credentialed professionals are authorized to perform ultrasound exams. This not only safeguards patients but also reinforces our role as specialized professionals and helps create consistent standards across states.

Credentialing is equally critical. It confirms that sonographers have the education, training, and clinical competency needed to deliver safe, high-quality care, strengthening public trust and protecting the profession from being devalued by unqualified individuals.

Current Legislative Priorities
This year, we’ve been actively engaged in legislative initiatives in multiple states. From advancing sonographer licensure in North Carolina and Pennsylvania to addressing the lack of authority for sonographers to inject contrast agents in New York, we are working to strengthen professional standards. We are also closely monitoring bills in California, Kentucky, and Michigan that could impact patient safety, workplace roles, and sonographer recognition.

We Strengthen the Profession
Our advocacy doesn’t stop with one bill or one state. We collaborate with other medical imaging organizations to present a united front on key issues like protecting scope of practice, promoting safer workplaces, and ensuring only qualified professionals perform ultrasound procedures. This approach allows us to amplify the profession’s needs and influence outcomes that matter to you.

How You Can Help
Advocacy is most effective when members are engaged. We encourage you to reach out to your local legislators and help them understand the importance of credentialed sonographers. If you’re not sure who represents you, find your state and local representatives here.

It’s easy to wonder if advocacy efforts truly make a difference when the impact isn’t immediately visible. But your voice matters and together, we are making a difference. Thank you for being a part of the SDMS community and for the work you do each day to elevate sonography and patient care.

Sincerely,
