Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Celebrates Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month

by SDMS Staff

For Immediate Release

Addison, Texas – The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) proudly joins in celebrating Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) this October. MUAM highlights the vital role of diagnostic medical sonography in healthcare and honors the sonographers whose expertise, compassion, and dedication improve patient outcomes every day.

Sonographers perform diagnostic medical ultrasound examinations across specialties such as vascular, abdominal, obstetrics/gynecology, cardiac, breast, pediatric, and musculoskeletal. Their skill and insight provide physicians with critical information that supports early detection, accurate diagnoses, and effective treatment planning.

MUAM is a collaborative initiative of six organizations — the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), SDMS, and Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU). Together, these organizations celebrate MUAM to promote awareness, education, and advocacy for the sonography profession.

What began in 1992 as a week-long observance has grown into a month-long celebration, with activities designed to:

  • Raise awareness of the role of diagnostic medical sonography in healthcare
  • Celebrate sonographers for their expertise
  • Educate patients and the public on the value of ultrasound imaging
  • Advocate for professional recognition and workforce advancement

“As the largest professional society for sonographers and sonography students, the SDMS is proud to honor and thank every sonographer who makes a difference in patient care,” said Aubrey Rybyinski, BS, RDMS, RVT, FSDMS, President of the SDMS and SDMS Foundation. “Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month is also a moment of gratitude — for the mentors who taught us precision, the colleagues who share their knowledge, and the students and emerging leaders who inspire confidence in the future of our profession. Together, we are a community dedicated to excellence, patient safety, and advancing sonography.”

The SDMS encourages healthcare facilities, physician offices, imaging facilities, and educational institutions to celebrate MUAM by recognizing sonographers in staff meetings and newsletters, educating patients and colleagues about the contributions of sonographers, and sharing appreciation on social media using #MUAM2025. To support these efforts, SDMS offers a variety of free resources, including downloadable MUAM logos, posters, and graphics, available at: sdms.org/muam
