SDMS President's Message - March 2026

by Aubrey Rybyinski, SDMS President

Aubrey Rybyinski

Dear SDMS Members,

Earlier this year, SDMS asked sonographers a simple but important question: What do you need from your professional society right now?

Your responses were clear. You told us that in a rapidly changing healthcare environment where sonographers are being asked to do more with less, you need two things above all else: Advocacy. Education.

In response to your feedback, the SDMS Board of Directors recently voted to formally adopt a new value statement to guide our work: SDMS – Advocacy and Education for Sonographers

This statement is intentionally concise. It is not a tagline. It is not a campaign. It is a commitment. It reflects what you told us matters most.

What This Means

Advocacy means representing the interests of sonographers in conversations that shape the future of our profession. That includes monitoring and responding to policy developments, contributing to workforce and patient safety discussions, and helping ensure that sonographers have a voice in decisions that affect clinical practice and care delivery.

Education means supporting sonographers throughout their careers with access to credible learning opportunities, professional resources, and programs that promote competency, confidence, and continued growth. It also means helping students and early-career professionals enter the field prepared to meet professional standards and expectations.

What You Can Expect

You will see this focus reflected across our 2026 initiatives. When SDMS launches a program, evaluates a partnership, or allocates resources, the question will be simple: Does this advance advocacy or education for sonographers? If it does, we pursue it. If it doesn’t, we reconsider. That clarity strengthens the Society and strengthens the sonography profession.

Most importantly, this value statement was not created in a vacuum. It was shaped directly by the input of practicing sonographers. Your voice guided this decision, and your needs define our priorities.

As healthcare continues to change, SDMS will remain what you told us you need most: A steady advocate and a trusted educational partner.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your engagement, your professionalism, and your dedication to patient care. Together, we will continue to elevate the profession.
