Addison, Texas – The Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) proudly joins in celebrating Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month (MUAM) this October honoring sonographers and their essential contributions to patient care. MUAM provides an opportunity to recognize these healthcare professionals and raise awareness of how diagnostic medical sonography supports diagnosis and treatment.

SDMS’s 2026 MUAM theme, “Inside Images,” celebrates the impact sonographers have on the lives of their patients. Behind every image is a skilled sonographer who combines technical knowledge, clinical judgment, and attentive patient care to provide information essential to diagnosis and treatment.

SDMS joins the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI), and Society for Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) in promoting MUAM. Together, these organizations raise awareness of diagnostic medical sonography, and the role sonographers play in healthcare.

“Sonographers make a difference through both the diagnostic information they provide and the care they bring to each patient encounter,” said Aubrey Rybyinski, BS, RDMS, RVT, FSDMS, President of SDMS and SDMS Foundation. “Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to recognize that work and thank sonographers for their contributions. We also encourage employers to support sonographers through professional recognition and opportunities to grow throughout their careers.”

SDMS encourages healthcare facilities, physician offices, imaging facilities, and educational institutions to use MUAM to recognize and celebrate sonographers and the important work they do. Recognition might include special events or activities, staff recognition, small tokens of appreciation, features in newsletters or internal communications, patient and colleague education about the role of sonographers, and social media recognition using #MUAM2026 and tagging @TheSDMS.
